A brief overview of the opinions of scientists from different countries about the Hirsch index is given. In general, many perceive this index as an indicator that does not reliably reflect the performance of specific specialists and hinders the development of science. The issue of the need to maintain a balance between breakthrough and replication studies is raised; it is noted that the Hirsch index stimulates the development of the latter to the detriment of the former. The need to develop a new scientometric indicator, devoid of the shortcomings of the Hirsch index, which will be positively received by domestic scientists, and became the basis for formation of a domestic (national) system of scientometrics is noted.
