Convection PCR in different types of convective cells

Year: 2018

Pages: 410-442

Number: Volume 10, issue 4

Type: scientific article

Summary:

Herein we describe existing platforms for convection PCR based on thermo-gravitation in convective cells of reaction vessels. Patents, patent applications and the available published literature have been extensively reviewed in order to compare the various platforms and approaches to nucleic acid amplification by thermal convection. First, we evaluate and review the different reaction vessels for convection PCR, including standard microtubes, capillary tubes, pieces of tubing, microfluidic devices, rotating microchips and also other types of vessels. We then consider the methods and sources of heat supply to the reaction for the formation of convective fluid flows. Particular attention was paid to the types of convective cells, including historical aspects of their discovery and study. We provide real-time operating sensitivity estimates for the various platforms of convection PCR, which include commercially produced models as well as homemade constructions.
