The influence of the ratio of the concentrations of endogenous phytohormones (IAA, ABA and cytokinins) in calli of wheat (cv. Bashkirskaya 26) and barley (cv. Steptoe and its ABA-deficient mutant AZ34) was studied. It was established that in the calli with different embryoidogenic ability the relative content of IAA was most strongly changed in comparison with other hormones. The relative contents of ABA and cytokinins did not change significantly. Absolute values of cytokinin content were similar in all types of calli in both studied cereals. Embryoidogenic calli were characterized by an elevated level of IAA in relation to ABA and cytokinins. In non-embryoidogenic calli there was a significant increase in the relative content of IAA in relation to ABA and cytokinins. The role of endogenous phytohormones in the induction of embryoidogenesis is discussed. A conclusion was drawn on the determining role of the balance of IAA and ABA in the embryoidogenic ability of calli.
