Effect of sugars root exudation on development of fusariosis in wheat and barley

Number: Volume 10, issue 1

Type: scientific article

Summary:

The composition and intensity of the exudation for the main sugars in various genotypes of wheat and barley cultivar Belogorsky at an early stage (5 days) of plant development were studied. The lowest total exudation of sugars was observed in wheat cultivars Veda, Bezostaya 1 and Lilyok, the largest – in the cultivar Swan and barley. As a result of the vegetation experiments, a relationship between the plant resistance to root rot caused by Fusarium culmorum and the intensity of sugar exudation was found. The most significant increasing in the density of the F. culmorum was observed in the rhizosphere of wheat of the cultivar Swan and in barley of the cultivar Belogorsky, which produced increased amount of sugars (mainly glucose), which subsequently led to a much more intensive development of symptoms of root rot.
