Roots of sunflower Heliantus annuus L. are used in the treatment of urolithiasis and cholelithiasis. Harvesting of sunflower roots for medical purposes is associated with a number of problems, the most urgent of which is the impossibility of year-round cultivation in Russia, the lack of adaptations and machines for harvesting roots and the contamination of roots with pesticides. In this connection, it is of great interest to make cultures of isolated sunflower hairy roots that can grow on hormone-free media. The aim of our work was to generate hairy roots of sunflower with the strains A4 and 15834 of Agrobacterium rhizogenes and to evaluate the parameters of their growth on solid and liquid media. As a result of the study, a greater efficacy of the A4 A. rhizogenes strain was revealed than strain 15834 in the agrobacterial transformation of sunflower cotyledon explants. The efficiency of transformation of the cotyledons of H. annuus was 93% using strain A4 and 78% using strain 15834. On a solid medium, the average root length obtained with A4 strain increased by 17.6 ± 0.88 cm in three weeks. Average the length of the roots obtained with strain 15834 increased by 17.9 ± 0.894 cm in three weeks. Thus, there were no statistically significant differences between the two strains in this parameter. The cultures of isolated sunflower hairy roots generated after agrobacterial transformation were characterized by the ability to grow unlimitedly on a non-hormone medium. After analyzing the content of alkaline alkaloids and organic acids in them the sunflower hairy roots can be used for biotechnological production.
