Reduction of transpiration and leaf water potential, the accumulation of abscisic acid (ABA) and the decline of cytokinins in barley plants under water deficit with using of PEG 6000 were shown. Phosphate elimination from the nutrient solution caused a similar reaction, but less than PEG, while the content of cytokinins in the roots dramatically increased. Osmotic stress caused less disturbance of water metabolism in phosphate deficient plants, which was due to an increase in hydraulic conductivity and the accumulation of osmotically active substances in the roots. The effect of abscisic acid and cytokinins on the hydraulic conductivity and the osmotic accumulation, respectively, is discussed.
