Should beware of the GMOs? On-site observers view on the hysteria around

Year: 2014

Pages: 77-138

Number: Volume 6, issue 2

Type: scientific article

Summary:

The wide range of the problems connected with the genetic modified organisms (GMO) is considered. The main attention is paid to GM-plants, their types, a variety, prospects of receiving and use. Importance of comprehensive study of vegetable organisms for future mankind is noted. The short history of transgene plants creation and justification of their need for the modern world are given. The basic principles of the genetically engineered methods which are the cornerstone of purposeful changes of a nuclear and/or plastid genome of plants, leading to emergence at them new useful properties, simplifying technologies of cultivation of crops and storage of crop production are considered. Fears and myths about the threat to health of mankind attributed to gene-modified organisms are dispelled. Prerequisites of the begun fight against a transgenisis and the possible risks connected with the use of the food containing the genetic modified ingredients are in details sorted. Some aspects to regulation of cultivation of GM-cultures and detection of GMO are also considered. Absolute uselessness and impossibility to precisely define the maintenance of GMO in raw materials and products at the threshold level is proved.
